The Department of Visual Studies

The Department of Visual Studies unites Art Practice, Theory and Art History and is dedicated to the practice and scholarship surrounding the history, critical study and making of art. Visual Studies offers programs in Art and Art History in addition to Visual Studies courses, faculty and degree programs on the graduate level.

What is Visual Studies?

Visual artists and visual theorists have evolved towards a more diverse and hybrid form of study, focused upon a broad integration of art practice with contemporary visual theory and art history. Current discussions of visual theory and aesthetic practice are referred to as Visual Studies, a manifestation of a new focus upon a nexus of concerns that will bring together art practice, study and research.
